Manager Matt Thomas today spoke of his delight of having 17 players available for the recent win over Shrewsbury Town.
“Yes its always nice to have a big squad, but it was pleasing to see the return of club skipper Dyfan Jones. We had agreed to ease him back into the game after missing almost 2 months out with his injury but with Richards feeling his leg , I made the decision to chuck Dyfan on. Thankfully it paid off and it felt like he was never missing. He’s a big voice for us off the pitch so you can only imagine what he’s like on the pitch”
Asked about the two new faces on the injury table the gaffer was disappointed to lose another two key players.
“Losing another central defender is always going to hurt you, it means I have to move players around and alter the way we play to suit people playing in different positions, but looking on the bright side we took Richards off as a precaution and he’s only missing for a week.
Andy on the other hand is abit more serious, the lads taken a knock to his knee and gone over awkwardly on it, he struggled to put weight on it, hes been assessed by the physio and hes out for the month, when you look at the bigger picture it could of been far worse but hes a good lad and will work hard to comeback for this injury”
Looking back at the starting XI on Saturday were you happy with how they preformed and what impact did the substitutions have?
“I was still undecided about the right back position until about 20 minutes before kick off, it was between young Nicky or Chez (Ian Edwards), both players can do a tremendous job there, I started with nick for the simple reason that he has worked so hard on his defence game in resent months it was time he was given a chance! And he took it with both hands!
Having Chez on the bench allowed me to throw him on with his pace and power and it causes opposition problems that they cant handle”.
Saturday’s win seen Vice captain Steven Garnett notch up his 9th goal in 11 games, are you happy with that return?
“Extremely, Stevie went through a dry patch of about 8 months without a goal. Now hes hitting everything. His hat trick the other week really gave him alot of confidence. His goal was comming on the weekend, he had to wait for it, but he picked his moment and smack back of the net. Stevie and Teetz (Steve Elliot) have been working well together in the middle, Teetz has learnt alot of Stevie and he’s another one who’s defensive play has improved and allowed others to push abit higher up when we are attacking”
The gaffer is missing Jason Richards (groin) and Dyfan Jones (leg) for Saturday’s visit of Halifax, but they welcome back Aaron Scott (illness) Tom Campbell (broken foot) and Nathan Williams (hamstring) into the fold.
Can the red dragon’s continue 2014 with another 3 points?
